- $ Buy-up Program
- Chapter 1606 — Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)
The MGIB-SR program may be available to you if you are a member of the Selected Reserve (Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard). - Chapter 1607 — Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP)
REAP makes certain reservists who were activated for at least 90 days, either eligible for education benefits or eligible for increased benefits. - Chapter 31 — Special Vocational Training (SVT)
SVT if qualified with a 20 percent or higher disability rating from the Veterans Administration, could be eligible for education benefits of tuition, fees, books and a housing stipend. - Chapter 35 — Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance Program (DEA)
The DEA program is available for eligible dependents (son, daughter, spouse) of certain veterans. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits.
Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)
You may be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill if you have at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or if you have a service-connected disability after 30 days. Payment is based on the amount of service completed. If you are eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill and another GI Bill benefit such as the Montgomery GI Bill, you are required to choose which benefit you wish to receive.
Post 9/11 GI Bill Veteran Payments:
- Net Tuition and fees cost paid directly to the school not to exceed the maximum of 17,500 per academic year, (1 August through 30 July)
- A monthly housing allowance is based on the Basic Allowance for Housing for an E-5 with dependents at the location of the school and the rate of pursuit.
- An annual books and supplies stipend paid proportionately based on enrollment.
- A one-time rural benefit payment for eligible individuals.
Things you should consider:
- In some locations, the costs of college and housing (which you would receive payment for under the Post-9/11 GI Bill) are less than the payment you would receive under the Montgomery GI Bill.
- In some states, veterans do not have to pay tuition at selected state colleges. The Post-9/11 GI Bill may then pay only the housing benefit and the book stipend.
- If you are eligible for a college fund under other GI Bill programs, you will continue to receive college fund payments. Payments will be made on a monthly basis instead of a lump sum at the beginning of the term.
- If you participated in the $600 buy-up under the Montgomery GI Bill or REAP, you will not receive that additional benefit under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
Yellow Ribbon Program
The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program) allows Heald College to voluntarily enter into an agreement with VA to fund tuition expenses that exceed the $17,500 cap. The institution can contribute up to 50 percent of those expenses and VA will match the same amount as the institution.
Eligibility:
- You served an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001, of at least 36 months.
- You were honorably discharged from active duty for a service connected disability and you served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001.
- Please remember that you must be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill at the 100 percent rate to be considered for the Yellow Ribbon Program.
Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA)
The MyCAA program provides Financial Assistance for military spouses who are pursuing degree programs, licenses or credentials leading to careers in high growth, high demand portable career fields.
Eligibility:
- This program is available to spouses of active-duty service members or activated Guard or Reserve members in pay grades E1-E5, W1-W2, and O1-O2. Military spouses are required to finish their program of study within three years from the start date of the first course. There is a fiscal year cap of $2,000 (waivers may be available for spouses pursuing programs that require up-front tuition greater than $2,000).
- Military spouses who are military members themselves are not eligible. Military members have education benefits provided through the Military Voluntary Education Tuition Assistance (TA) Program.
- Military spouses who are legally separated by state law or court order are not eligible.
Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium
Heald College is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium. Heald is proud to be a part of a program that helps service members and their families get college degrees. Military students can take courses in their off-duty hours at or near military installations in the United States, overseas, and on Navy ships.
SOC member schools make it easier to obtain college degrees rather than just accumulate course credit by:
- Limiting the amount of coursework students must take at a single college to no more than 25 percent of degree requirements.
- Designing transfer practices to minimize loss of credit and avoid duplication of coursework.
- Awarding credit for military experience.
- Awarding credit for tests such as CLEP, ECE, and DSST national testing programs.
- Active-duty students may use tuition assistance to fund their programs; reserves and veterans may use the Montgomery GI Bill.
